Plastic Bottle + Water + Bleach = Free Lighting!

How often do you hear the phrase ‘Free energy?’ Well, some innovative thinkers in Sitio Maligaya located in Philippines have invented a light bulb that works only using sunlight, water, bleach, and one liter plastic bottle! The bulb is said to have the capacity equivalent to a 60W bulb providing a source of light for those areas that dwell in darkness even during the day. We take our traditional electric bulbs for granted without realizing that somewhere in the world there are people who would gladly welcome even the faintest ray of the sun into their homes.

What’s more? The idea is even applicable where clean water is not available since bleach, also known as sodium hypochlorite, oxidizes or breaks up the bonds in the water making it cleaner (which basically means disinfecting). Once bleach has been added, the substance (in this case, we have water) only reflects light from then on as shown in the video where the sunlight is basically being dispersed inside the bottle. However, care has to be taken to make sure that bleach does not come in contact with the skin or is accessible to children because if inhaled the fumes can cause coughing, airway irritation, sore throat, irritate the eyes, and cause redness/irritation of the skin.
